Susan Lilley Russell is at peace. She died Wednesday, December 30, 2009, in New York City.

Susan was born on March 30, 1948, in Cambridge, Mass., to Nancy and Tom Lilley. Soon after her birth, the family -- including her two big sisters Anne and Cynthia -- moved to Michigan where they made a home in Ann Arbor.

Susan was a proud "Pioneer" in the city's schools, and graduated in 1966. She remained in Ann Arbor and enrolled at the University of Michigan, majoring in art history. She followed her passion to Florence, Italy, where she earned her master's degree in art restoration.

In 1977, Susan married the love of her life, Don. Together they raised their two children, Kristin and James, from their home in Bedford Hills. Every year they traveled to a family cottage in Old Mission, Michigan, where Susan had spent nearly every summer since she was a child. The family will always treasure the memories from those special trips.

Susan and Don owned and operated Russell's Carpet Warehouse in Ridgefield, Conn., for more than 12 years. Early retirement allowed them to move to Sharon, Conn., in 1999, where they were embraced by the close-knit community.

In recent years, Susan continued her trips to Michigan to be refreshed by the woods and waters of Old Mission, and the laughs and smiles of her four grandchildren. They will miss their "Nana."

Susan's intellect was amazing, her courage was an inspiration, and her wry sense of humor brought smiles to everyone around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew, Benjamin Hammond. She is survived by her husband Don, her children, Kristin (Russell) Sulecki and James (Andrea) Russell, her grandchildren, Ben, Scout, Janie and Lola, her sisters, Anne Hammond and Cynthia (Peter Heinrich) Lilley, and many nieces and nephews.
